Dear children, Peter and the Wolf is a story told by the instruments of the orchestra-
And me.
The strings play Peter's tune.
And three horns pretend to be the wolf.
There's also a bird, which the flute does rather well.
And the cat's a clarinet.
Then we have a duck.
Oh, he's dumb.
And you hear him on the oboe.
Peter's grandfather is a bassoon.
Then you hear the shooting of the huntsman on the timpani and bass drum.
So, those are the characters.
And now I'm going to tell you the story.
Ready?
Early one morning, Peter opened the gate of the cottage where he lived with his grandfather and went out into the green meadow.
On the branch of the tree sat a little bird.
Peter knew this bird.
The bird sang, oh, he's quiet, like this.
But Peter hadn't closed the gate, and so a duck came waddling out, quack, quack, quack, for a swim in the meadow
pond.
The little bird flew down beside the duck and shrugged his shoulders.
He said, duck, you're no bird if you can't fly.
To which the duck said, listen, canary, you're no bird if you can't swim.
Put that in your beak and smoke it, and then dived into the pond.
Splash!
Well, they argued and argued and argued, with the duck swimming around the pond and the bird hopping along the bank.
Hoppity skip, hoppity skip, skippity hop, skippity hop.
Then Peter saw something.
There was a cat, slinking through the grass.
Real sneaky.
The cat was thinking, hmm, that bird is talking too much.
I am going to creep up to that bird and eat it.
Well, the bird went on talking, and the cat crept.
Oh, look out!
Peter shouted.
And then in a flash, the bird was on the top branch of the tree.
Whistling With the duck quacking angrily at the cat.
From the middle of the pond.
The cat prowled round and round the tree and thought, Is it worthwhile climbing up so high?
That bird is very small, and I am very hungry.
I guess by the time I get up there, it will have gone.
Then out came Grandfather.
He was cross when he found Peter in the meadow.
This meadow, he said, is dangerous.
What if a wolf came out of the forest?
Peter ignored Grandfather's warning.
You see, boys like Peter are simply not afraid of wolves.
Nevertheless, Grandfather took Peter by the hand, locked the gate, and led him home.
And then, what do you think came out of the forest?
A nasty, big, black wolf.
The cat was up the tree
before anyone could say, Prokofiev.
The duck quacked, and in her excitement, jumped out of the pond.
Whoops!
But no matter how hard she ran, she couldn't escape the wolf.
He was getting nearer, nearer, catching up with her, right on her tail.
Then he got her, and with one huge gulp, swallowed her.
Now, this was the situation.
The cat was sitting on one branch of the tree.
And the bird on another.
Not too close to the cat.
And underneath, the wolf stalked round and round the tree, and looked at them with greedy eyes.
Oh, it was a wicked wolf!
Meanwhile, Peter stood behind the locked gate, without the slightest fear, and watched all that was going on.
Suddenly, he had an idea.
He ran home, got out a rope, and climbed up a wall, so that he could reach a branch of the tree.
Now he grabbed the branch, and climbed into the tree.
Peter said to the bird, Fly down and circle round the wolf's head.
Drive him crazy, but don't let him catch you.
The bird nearly touched the wolf's head with his wings, and the wolf snapped at him wildly.
Ruff!
Ruff!
By this time, the wolf was having hysterics.
He just couldn't get that bird.
It was to the wolf an absurd bird.
Meanwhile, Peter had made a lasso, and dropping it very carefully, caught the wolf by the tail, and heaved him up with all his might.
Caught in a very embarrassing position, the wolf jumped wildly to get loose.
By now, Peter had tied the other end of the rope to the tree.
And the more the wolf jumped, the tighter he was held.
Just then, who should come out of the woods
but the huntsman, following the wolf's trail, and shooting like mad things.
Peter called from the tree, Don't shoot!
The bird and I have caught the wolf, and we're going to sell him to a zoo.
And so, there was a triumphant procession.
1, 2, 3, 4 There was Peter up in front.
Then the hunters leading the wolf, 1, 2, 3, 4 Halt!
Halt!
All right, go on.
And at the back, guess who?
Grandfather and the cat.
Grandfather was still angry.
Well, let's face it.
He thought, now get this, it'll kill you.
He thought, what if Peter had not caught the wolf?
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
What then?
Above them flew the little bird, still chattering, See how clever we are!
Peter!
Look what we have caught!
And how!
And now, if you will listen very, very carefully, you will hear the duck quacking away inside the wolf.
Quack, quack, quack.
Because in his hurry, the wolf had swallowed her.
Alive!
Good night, children.
